Conservation of Peat Swamp Forest
Globally recognized Important Bird & Key Biodiversity Areas | 230 flora & fauna species | 29 Rare, Threatened and Endangered (RTE) species
The Southeast Pahang Peat Swamp Forest where the project zone is located is part of the globally recognized Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA – Site ID MY18) and Key Biodiversity Area (KBA -Site ID 16040).
In line with Verra’s CCB Standards, the project established a biodiversity baseline in 2022 and 2023 covering mammal, bird, fish, herpetofauna and plant species. According to our 2024 Monitoring Report 1 (MR1), 230 flora and fauna species have been identified, of which 29 species are categorized as Rare, Threatened and Endangered (RTE) according to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
These species include the Hairy-nosed Otter, Raffles’ Banded Langur, Wrinkled Hornbill, and Ramin tree, among others. The full list of the species can be found in our Project Description Document (PDD).
Key Methods for Monitoring and Data Collection
- Camera traps for wildlife detection and monitoring.
- Fixed transect point counts for bird diversity monitoring.
- Fish diversity monitoring associated to pre- and post-canal block surveys.
- Bioacoustics devices and environment DNA (eDNA) surveys, currently under development and scheduled to commence in 2026.
- Spatial Monitoring and Reporting Tool (SMART) patrols conducted regularly to monitor and safeguard the project area from illegal activities, e.g., encroachment, poaching, open burning, etc.
- Incorporation of local indigenous knowledge, local experiences and citizen science contributions.
Our strategic and ongoing partnerships with key government agencies and leading research and academic institutions enable the integrated, efficient, and impactful delivery of conservation initiatives. We also conduct community engagement activities with Jakun indigenous villagers, schools, NGOs, and other stakeholders to promote biodiversity conservation and harmonious coexistence.
