The Forestry Department of Malaysia, in collaboration with the Pahang Peatland Restoration Project (PPRP), launched the Largest Peat Swamp Forest Tree Planting Event in Malaysia today, recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records.

Under this initiative, a total of 20,000 peat swamp trees of various native species were planted today, on a site which was severely burned during a March 2025 fire.

This large-scale effort is both symbolic and practical — bringing life back to a landscape scarred by fire while strengthening the resilience of peatland ecosystems. PPRP embarked on a restoration effort of Southeast Pahang’s peatlands in 2023.

This includes hydrology restoration to ensure peatland in this area remains wet and the habitat of native floral and fauna species is conserved and restored. PPRP is also committed to caring for the saplings planted today to ensure the best possible survival and growth.

This includes regular monitoring and measures to protect against weeds and fire, while giving employment opportunities to local communities.

“Planting is only the first step — ensuring survival and growth is the real challenge.

That is why PPRP has committed to nurturing and caring for these saplings over the next two years, giving the replanted area the best possible chance to grow into a strong and resilient natural forest,” said Dr Jane Koh, PPRP Project Lead.

The initiative also reflects PPRP’s active role in fire prevention in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department, reducing the risks of recurring peatland fires.

This event is part of Malaysia’s broader commitment to climate action, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management
